Extended family sessions with dogs are some of my favorites to photograph. They’re filled with laughter, and connection. These moments highlight just how important family truly is. Recently, I had the privilege of photographing a multi-generation family gathering in Frankfort, KY.
When families come together from different cities—or in this case even different countires — there’s something extra special in the air. Baby cousins are getting to know each other, grandparents are soaking in every hug. Siblings are reminiscing about childhood memories. Adding dogs into the mix brings even more joy. Let’s be honest—they’re often the glue that keeps everyone smiling & laughing.
One thing I always encourage is including pets in family portraits. Dogs aren’t just pets; they’re family members. They bring energy, comfort, and humor to every session. During this extended family session, the pups kept things lively—whether that meant running across the yard for a frisbee break or curling up next to mom during group shots. These are the kinds of details that make portraits unforgettable.
The beauty of extended family sessions lies in their legacy. These portraits capture not just a single family unit, but the entire network of love and relationships across generations. From grandparents with their grandchildren, to siblings with their dogs, these images become heirlooms that can be treasured for decades to come.
The key to a successful extended family session is choosing a relaxed location where everyone feels at ease. That might be someone’s backyard, a favorite park in Lexington. But in this case, it was a rental home where everyone was staying. The focus is less about the location and more about capturing genuine interactions and connections.
If you’re planning an extended family gathering in Lexington, KY or Central Kentucky why not capture the moment with a photography session that includes every member of the family—dogs included! I’d love to help you create portraits that celebrate your family’s story. Contact me today to reserve your session.
