Some dogs leave paw prints on our hearts. Others leave paw prints on an entire community. Recently, I had the honor of photographing a very special birthday session for Sugar and her mom, Mara Delaus, co-founder of Saved by Fate Dog Rescue. While every birthday session is worth celebrating, this one felt particularly meaningful because Sugar is more than just a beloved family dog. She is the dog whose love helped inspire a mission that has changed the lives of countless rescue dogs. As someone who has had the privilege of partnering with Saved by Fate Dog Rescue over the years through calendar contests and fundraising projects, photographing Sugar and Mara together felt like celebrating the heart behind it all.
Anyone who has spent time around dog lovers knows that sometimes one extraordinary dog changes everything. For Mara, that dog was Sugar. The bond they share is undeniable. Watching the two of them together, it becomes easy to understand how one special dog could inspire a lifelong commitment to helping others. Because that’s what dogs do. They have a remarkable ability to open our hearts and teach us how deeply we are capable of loving. Saved by Fate Dog Rescue has helped countless dogs find loving homes.
People celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, and milestones all the time, but our dogs deserve celebrations too.Their lives may feel far too short, but the memories they give us last forever. A birthday session is a beautiful way to pause, celebrate another year together, and preserve the little details we never want to forget. The gray around the muzzle, the familiar expressions, and the way our dogs look at us with complete trust and devotion become priceless memories with time. That is exactly why I love sessions that celebrate pups and their people. They remind us that we don’t have to wait for a major life event to create meaningful photographs. Simply celebrating the love we share with our dogs is reason enough.
More than anything, this session was about celebrating the relationship between Sugar and Mara. There were sweet moments, laughter, cuddles, and the kind of connection that can only come from years spent loving one another. These are the photographs that will become treasured memories years from now.Thank you, Mara, for everything you have done for rescue dogs through Saved by Fate. And thank you, Sugar, for being the dog who inspired it all. Because sometimes one dog really can change the world.

Through years of working alongside a therapy dog in schools and retirement homes, I witnessed how animals soften people. They open conversation, ease loneliness, and creating moments of connection where there might have been none. Those experiences shaped how I see the bond between pets and humans, and why it deserves to be celebrated and cherished.
I’ve also spent a few years volunteering with rescues and raising funds for dogs who need help and homes. Being close to those stories, the fragile beginnings and second chances has deepened my respect for the responsibility that comes with telling these stories, too.
Sessions are easygoing and thoughtfully guided. I offer direction when it’s helpful, while leaving space for movement, personality, and the moments that unfold naturally.
My goal is for you to feel comfortable and present. So the experience itself feels enjoyable. You can read happy client comments here.
